2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Review – Off-Road Toughness Elevated

The Colorado is one of the best midsize pickups for a mix of on- and off-road handling. But the ZR2 Bison is even more capable thanks to a host of unique upgrades.

The truck uses a high-output version of the four-cylinder engine that delivers 310 horsepower. The ZR2’s divine Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers enhance its abilities on and off the pavement.

Off-Road Toughness Elevated

With a Baja-ready suspension, massive tires, and smart off-road tech, the ZR2 is a go-anywhere truck. It’s a big step up from the already capable Colorado Trail Boss and Z71, with a 3-inch suspension lift over the base pickup, Multimatic DSSV dampers that keep you in control no matter what the Terrain throws at you, driver-selectable electronic locking front and rear differentials to improve traction if one wheel starts to slip, off-road rocker protectors to keep fender flares safe from off-road obstacles, and a host of other features.

Yet it drives like a traditional body-on-frame truck with a responsive and capable standard four-cylinder engine. Fuel economy is a bit worse at 17/21/19 mpg, but that’s the penalty for a car with this much hardware.

My test ZR2 came equipped with a host of driver-assistance tech, including forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and a following-distance indicator. You can also opt for adaptive cruise control and surround-view and underbody cameras.

If you’re a true off-roader, the ZR2 is the only way to go for a midsize pickup. But it’s a shame the Chevy is so expensive that most potential buyers will be left in the dust of competitors like the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, and Ford Ranger Raptor.

Stability and Control

Despite riding higher off the ground than other midsize pickups like the Toyota Tacoma and Honda Ridgeline, the Colorado still feels roomy inside. Thanks to its low seating position, drivers enjoy a commanding view of the road, and the front seats offer plenty of headroom and legroom. The rear seat, as in many trucks with this layout, is a little more cramped and can be challenging for children to use.

Chevrolet takes safety seriously in Colorado, incorporating standard airbags throughout the cabin and providing advanced driver-assistance systems. Blind-spot monitoring alerts you to nearby vehicles, while lane departure warnings can help prevent you from unintentionally drifting out of your lane. An adaptive cruise control system that includes lane centring can also reduce highway fatigue.

The 2024 Colorado ZR2 offers even more driver-assistance features to make it easier than ever to tackle off-road trails and other rough conditions. Baja mode helps you maximize power delivery and stability while reducing intervention from the electronic locking differentials. You can also enable Hill Descent Control to maintain steady speeds when descending steep hills.

A finely tuned suspension system ensures a smooth ride regardless of the vehicle’s performance. The Colorado’s cabin is also comfortable, with a variety of amenities to keep passengers happy and productive on long trips.

An available Wi-Fi hotspot keeps everyone connected to the internet and allows them to stream movies, TV shows, and music from their favourite devices. The Colorado’s infotainment system is also intuitive and easy to use, providing access to all the most popular features and applications.

Driver assistance systems are another vital aspect of the Colorado’s comfort. Features like forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control help you avoid accidents and stay safe on busy Harrisburg highways.

Value

Colorado’s 2.7-litre turbo four-cylinder makes plenty of power, and the new ZR2’s ability to crawl easily is hard to match. Even with 35-inch tires and lower ground clearance, it can clear obstacles that would leave most other pickups struggling.

The truck’s 3.6-liter V-6 also offers ample power to haul and tow loads, and the rear seat is spacious enough for adults to sit comfortably. The short bed has many cargo-securing options, too: Chevy lists eight fixed tie-down cleats and nine more movable cleats.

While it’s less versatile than a Toyota Tacoma or Honda Ridgeline, Colorado is one of our top midsize trucks for its powerful engine, comfortable ride, helpful tech features, and appealing value. That’s especially true if you pick the specialized ZR2 model.

This year’s model gets a number of new electronic driver aids that make it easier than ever to enjoy the great outdoors. The Off-Road Performance display allows you to see data readouts for the different driving modes, including Overland (for general off-pavement adventure), Terrain, and Baja. It’s the kind of info that can help a newbie off-roader learn to maximize the vehicle’s capabilities. This year, GM also added Hitch Guidance and Hitch View to assist with lining up trailer hitches. The latter uses cameras mounted in the mirrors to show you what the back of your truck looks like as you’re backing up.
